See & Do

Here we list what you can see and do in Öland

Borgholm Castle

Visit Borgholm Castle, also known as the "Nordic region's most powerful ruin," is well worth a visit. Inside the castle, you can wander around and feel the wings of history. There are beautiful exhibitions about the castle's history and a large play area for children to learn more about Borgholm Castle in a playful way. A tip is to take the little train from Borgholm Square to Borgholm Castle.

Sollidens Castle

When you walk through the gate to Sollidens Castle Park, you are met by a very special environment that invites you to walks and adventures. The park surrounds the Royal Family's summer palace and was established over a hundred years ago by the then Queen Victoria. She created a garden inspired by many parts of the world.

Lighthouses on Öland

There are many lighthouses on Öland, but there are two that you should especially see. Långe Erik on the northern tip and Långe Jan on the southern tip. Långe Jan is also Sweden's tallest lighthouse, and you get a fantastic view from the top of it.

Windmills

Sandviks kvarn is one of the world's largest windmills, and by far the largest in the Nordic countries. It is of a Dutch type, which means that only the top, where the wings are attached, is rotatable. This is in contrast to the traditional Öland stub mills, where the entire mill is simply turned so that the wings face the wind. About 400 stub mills and around 20 Dutch-style windmills are preserved on Öland today. Sandviks Kvarn is very well-preserved. Stub mills were usually used for domestic needs, while the mill in Sandvik was a toll mill, meaning payment was required for grinding, either with money or grain.
